Собирательное название шрифтов без засечек, развивающих принципы построения старых гротесков. Они появились в 50-х годах ХХ века и были вызваны к жизни потребностями функциональной швейцарской школы типографики. Первые подобные шрифты – Helvetica (1957) Макса Мидингера (Max Miedinger) и Эдуарда Хоффмана (Edouard Hoffmann) и Univers (1957) Адриана Фрутигера (Adrian Frutiger, род. 1928). Новые гротески гораздо изящнее своих предшественников и почти не имеют отличительных черт, что позволяет характеризовать эти шрифты как стандартные и незаметные. Это закрытые одноширинные шрифты почти без контраста, с крупным очком строчных знаков [высота строчного знака относительно кегля], сильно развитые по начертаниям. Верхние выносные элементы этих шрифтов равны росту прописных знаков. Как правило, в новых гротесках применяются наклонные начертания (не курсивные). Углы наклона знаков от среднего до значительного. Примеры: Arial, Folio, Helvetica, Unica, Univers, Video.
